Production Sites

Ludwigshafen, Germany

Ludwigshafen, Germany

The BASF Group's main production site is located on the Rhine River, in Ludwigshafen, Germany. Ludwigshafen is the company's largest production site, global headquarters, and the center of its research activities. Since its founding more than 130 years ago, BASF's Ludwigshafen site has developed into the world's largest integrated chemical complex. 2,000 buildings stretch across the seven square kilometer site, where approximately 8,000 commercial products are manufactured. Roughly eight million metric tons of products are produced at the site every year. The site's historic integrated production system is the starting point for BASF's Verbund integration strategy. All 250 production plants are intricately linked with one another. More than 2,000 kilometers of above-ground piping ensure short transport distances for products and energy in the form of heating gas or steam.

BASF Corporation, Washington, USA

Surfactants have been produced at the Washington, NJ site since 1961. The site registered with the FDA in 1977 and makes a variety of liquid, paste and solid surfactants primarily derived from ethylene and propylene oxide. It also synthesizes over 100 products and produces numerous surfactant blends. Some products are converted to a prill or pastille form for customer applications requiring free flowing solids.

BASF Corporation, Geismar, USA

BASF Corporation, Geismar, USA

BASF's Geismar PVP facility manufactures a diverse line of products. The plant is located within BASF's Geismar chemical complex, giving it the advantage of backward integrated raw material supplies. The plant operates according to current Good Manufacturing Practices, and an on-site, fully equipped quality control laboratory certifies each batch. The technical capabilities of the facility are backed up by strong support from BASF's operations in Europe.

Effect Pigments, Peekskill, USA

The Peekskill site is located near the Hudson River in Peekskill, NY, approximately 40 miles north of New York City and spreads over 24 acres. BASF acquired the Peekskill site as part of its 2006 purchase of Engelhard Corporation. Before that it belonged to The Mearl Corporation, which was a privately owned company founded in 1933 by Henry L. Mattin and Francis Earle.

The Peekskill site comprises three facilities, Pigments Operations and Film Operations, which are situated across the road from one another, and Pearl Operations, located in nearby Buchanan.

It manufactures a diverse line of pearlescent effect pigments including those based on mica, borosilicate glass, and bismuth, and natural pearl. The wide array of products serves the cosmetic market as well as industrial and automotive applications.  On-site quality control and analytical laboratories provide plant support and quality certification for each batch produced. Both an on-site engineering staff and a product development team provide further technical support, and applications support is available via the R&D staff in nearby Ossining, NY.

Beauty Care Solutions Lyon, France

BASF acquired the Lyon site as part of its 2006 purchase of Engelhard Corporation. The company is known today as BASF Beauty Care Solutions France SAS. Pierre Devictor and a scientific team established the operation in Lyon, originally known as Coletica, in 1985.
At first, their main field of activity was development of connective tissue for medical use. Between the late 1980s and 1995, activity was expanded to the cosmetic and biomaterial fields through the development of two specific technology platforms: Encapsulation and tissue engineering.

1987 created its U.S. subsidiary
1993 acquired its current manufacturing facility
1998 earned ISO 9001 accreditation and decided to concentrate on developing products for the cosmetic market
1999 created a third technology platform Actives technology
2004 pursued additional international expansion by establishing a new Japanese subsidiary. 2005 acquired by Engelhard Corporation
2006 BASF acquired Engelhard

The Lyon site comprises three buildings. All buildings cover an area of 5500 m2.
The first building, known as “Saint Jean de Dieu,” houses:
Management, Human Resources, Customer Support, Information Technologies and administrative teams, as well as Research and Development and Quality Control laboratories, the encapsulation teams and a warehouse.
The second building, known as “Henri Vallée,” is an office building housing: Accounting, Logistics, Customer Service, Procurement, Quality Assurance, Maintenance and Facilities teams. The third building, known as "Clément Marot," is a dedicated manufacturing facility for cosmetic raw materials, active materials and innovative biotechnologies, such as encapsulation, for cosmetic and personal care product applications.

The Beauty Care Solutions portfolio is split into three different ranges: “Actives Book” offerings for standard catalogue products, the “Techno Book” offerings for customers’ specific needs, and “Engineering Book” offerings. The portfolio contents vectorization know-how from biomaterials (animal, marine, plants), visible and decorative spheres, and invisible systems to protect and promote penetration of the skin.

Beauty Care Solutions Long Island , USA

BASF acquired the Long Island sites as part of its 2006 purchase of Engelhard Corporation. The company is known today as BASF Beauty Care Solutions LLC.
The Long Island operations (previously known as The Collaborative Group) started as the anchor tenant within the Long Island High Technology Incubator situated on the campus of the State University of the New York (SUNY) at Stony Brook.

The idea for an Incubator grew from a New York State Urban Development Authority initiative in the early 1980s to establish small business incubators throughout the state as a means of transferring technology and ideas from universities to the private sector.
As business grew and larger manufacturing capabilities were needed, The Collaborative Group purchased property in the neighbouring town of East Setauket, where it built a manufacturing facility.

The Setauket facility houses the manufacturing operation and spreads over 27 acres.
The Stony Brook facility houses research & development and clinical and consumer testing activities on 34,000 sq. feet. These labs are involved in both in-house and client product development as well as in vitro and in vivo testing for safety and efficacy. Other departments housed in this facility include Sales, Marketing, Human Resources and Accounting.

The Beauty Care Solutions portfolio includes raw materials for the cosmetic and personal care industries, including state-of-the-art liposomes used as delivery systems to encapsulate vitamins, botanicals, antioxidants, sunscreens and other materials.
